On Tuesday 22 May, Bath and North East Somerset Council will welcome the Olympic Torch Relay as it travels around the UK.

Full details of the Route can be viewed via www.bathnes.gov.uk/torch2012

The first Torchbearer will leave the University of Bath at approximately 15:28pm, with the last Torchbearer exiting the City via Kelston Road (outside Oldfield School) at 16:43pm.

We are encouraging both residents and visitors alike to come into the City on Tuesday 22nd May, and to enjoy this once in a lifetime moment in Bath and North East Somerset’s sporting and cultural history. We are also aware that for some people, particularly disabled people and those persons with access needs, travelling into the City to enjoy this Event could be a challenge. Therefore, Bath and North East Somerset Council has reserved an area on Great Pulteney Street, between Edward Street and William Street, specifically for disabled people and their carers.

In addition, we are arranging for those disabled persons and their carers travelling into the City by car to be able to park in the Recreation Ground, by prior agreement.

From 2 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday 22 May, you will be given access to Great Pulteney Street, to drop off the disabled person(s) in the reserved area, and then take your vehicle to park on the Recreation Ground – as long as you have applied for a parking permit in advance. Once the Torch Relay Convoy has passed, you will be able to go and collect your vehicle and return to collect the disabled person(s).

Please note Great Pulteney Street will be closed to traffic from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, however, as long as you have made prior arrangements with the Council, a Steward will allow you access.

If you wish to take up this opportunity, you will need to apply to Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Sport and Active Lifestyles Team, email getactive@bathnes.gov.uk or telephone 01225 396429, with the following information BEFORE FRIDAY 11 MAY 2012, in order for the Permits to be posted to you in plenty of time:

    · Vehicle details, including Registration Number
    ·Name
·Postal Address – in order to post the Recreation Ground Parking Permit to you
·Number of People in vehicle requiring access to the reserved area
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the Sport and Active Lifestyles Team on the above number.

    Sponsored Family Cycle Ride 2012

    Posted on 01/05/2012

    Dear Parents/Carers and Families,

We would like to invite you to our second sponsored family cycle ride that SWALLOW, a local charity supporting people with learning disabilities and Fosse Way School are organising on Saturday 30th June at 10am.  The plan is to meet at Radstock Church Tea rooms (old Tea and Trade) at 10am on Saturday 30th June.  Here your family, friends and children will be able to register/check in and cycle along the cycle track from Radstock to Mells Yard and back. (Approx. 13kms)

If you don’t own a bike you can still take part in the event as we have a range of mountain bikes, children’s tricycles and scooters available for you to use, but if you can bring your own bikes on the day it would be useful.  We are also running two staggered groups for those who need to use the adapted disabled bikes, these are large specialised bikes for those who need extra assistant e.g. to support them to sit upright, three wheeled bikes, attached bikes, tandems and hand pedalled bikes.  The number of bikes available to borrow is limited and will be allocated before the event on a first come first served basis.

The event and costs associated with putting on the event are being self-funded by Fosse Way School and SWALLOW, therefore could we please ask for a voluntary contribution of entry for the event of £5 per family.  This will include a fundraising pack and a goody bag on the day.  Money raised from the sponsored cycle ride will go towards SWALLOW and Fosse Way School.  Fosse Way School will be putting the fundraising money towards refurbishing the soft play area.

Once reply slips have been returned, a pack will be sent out to you shortly that will include a sponsorship form and more specific details about the event. On the day of the event parents and carers are responsible for their own children/young adults.

Please could you send back the attached form to the school office by Tuesday 24th April

    Yours Sincerely

    Hannah Jones

    PSA/Extended Services Co-ordinator
